Amina is an
interesting figure in Garam Hawa as she is a character constantly awaiting
departure. Her marriage would mean a departure from one home to another, even
if earlier with Kazim this would only be a figurative one. She is constantly
reminded of her presence as unwanted, her brother points out that it is not
that there aren’t enough rooms but rather Amina who is extraneous. Her thoughts
constantly punctuated by the sounds of trains also allude to her own state of mind,
which is constantly burdened by her inability to get married.
