There is a huge communication gap between Maa and Baa. When
the father encounters Ushna for the first time, his reaction to her is
immediately understood, but also accepted as okay by both Maa and Barki. Instead
of conveying her apprehension about her husband’s behaviour to him directly, Maa
is sharing the problem with her own gender, Ushna and Barki.
Maa is often thinking and questioning her relationship with
Baa and as noted earlier in the novel, the figure of Maa is all about her
association with her children. However, neither Maa nor does Baa think about
the psychological effect of their disconnection and behaviour on their children.
Though Maa is suffering from such a dysfunctional relationship, but ultimately
the victims can be the children, who from such a young age suffer from a kind
of a psychological abuse. Throughout the text, the parents seem self absorbed and ignorant of how their dysfunctional relationship can have an effect on their children.
