comments on today's class: Patriarchy in the Sharif family

In movie Garam Hava we can notice the male dominance present in the sharif family. Salim Mirza is against the idea of leaving for Pakistan and he is ready to give any sacrifice for this even the happiness of her own daughter (assuming amina could marry kazim in Pakistan). Women have no discretion in the decision of migration. Amina wants to be with kazim she doesn’t care its india or Pakistan. Maa and Daadi also gets disconnected to their “home” when they leave their Haveli they would also leave india if they have not their haveli anymore. Whereas for Salim Mirza India is his home and he would do anything to stay there. Even the separation from Haveli and the loss of the factory has not shaken his decision to stay in India. So He is the only person remains who doesn’t want to leave his country. Its surprising how one man’s will to live in india is affecting his family. His son is falling short of money he has to feed his wife and son too. Amina is losing her love and Maa is worried about the wedding of her daughter. These finds reaffirms the existence of patriarchy in a Muslim Sharif family and it is rooted in the family to such extent they (females) don’t even complain to Salim Mirza. Moreover the economic issue which is the reason behind their entire problem is controlled by men of the house. In one scene of the movie when that man I don’t remember his name asks the mother of Amina about the lending of money she replies indifferently to the economic problem they are facing. This fact also supports the existence of male dominance in Sharif family.
