The family structures and its Ravayaats

Intizar Hussain’s Ihsan Manzil deals with how people react when reform/ change enters the domestic sphere. The story depicts both the struggles of the inhabitants of Ihsan Manzil as well as the reaction of the community, which is exhibited in wide spread gossip. Though this gossip can be seen as the main source of conflict, where the residents of Ihsan Manzil are pitted against the society, it is important to note that this criticism does not affect the people of the mansion. Rather it is the ravayaat that they themselves have set up that they struggle with. The educational reforms taking place in the sub-continent have infiltrated Ihsan Manzil and issues of how much of this reform to adopt plague the family. Though subsequent generations are seen to make more concessions than the last, where to draw the line is always a concern for these people.
