There's no Basti.

Basti I believe is what’s been lost and cannot be had again. Unfortunately, Zakir and company dwell on their losses for too long. Sabirah however, seems to be mindful of the idea that a Basti is not the new form of life. That’s not to say that unlike others she has lost touch with her emotional side and doesn't struggle with her feelings. She tried appearing reserved when Surinder brought Zakir up but sobbed when he mentioned the letter. But she’s moved on and adapted to her new life, without completely detaching herself from the past (reading about news from Dhaka). It seems that through her agency and the passivity of others, Intizar isn't trying to give a semblance of a basti – something we've been trying to read into – but the idea that the community that everyone felt at home with cannot be had again (explaining the helplessness of several characters), much like other things that they have lost in their lives.
