When Zakir is contemplating
over the idea of teaching history, there is an explicit implication of boredom.
What I found interesting in his soliloquy is his contrasting attitude between
teaching and studying history. He says, "Tareekh parhana boreeat ka kaam hai, aur tareekh parhna?” This
shows that it's not history that bores him but teaching it to immature minds
who are unable to grasp its essence. He later says,"Doosron ki tareekh araam se parhi ja sakti hai, jaise novel araam se
parha ja sakta hai. Magar apni tareekh?" This instates that he is not at peace with his own past. One’s ability to understand oneself in present is dependent
upon one’s ability to understand the choices and circumstances that brought one
to the current situation. Zakir referred to himself as an escapist and calls
his present “bereham haal”. His fidgety
encounters with history are the main cause of his restlessness."Zehn bole ja raha hai", this dialogue with himself reflects a state of constant anxiety which is partially why he is unable to move on. These
flashbacks and his inability to make peace with his past are causing him to
suffer in his present scenario.
