i agree with sibtay's point that much was discussed in
class about other things but the very concept of Kali shalwar and its
significance with respect to the context of sultana and muharram was
vague to me. Maybe Manto has not portrayed this
whole muharram thing not as a divide between the society but an event
which is harmoniously celebrated by hindus and Muslims equally. Also we
see that Sultana is very much devoted to this event though she is
portrayed as not a very religious personality but
a person who is deeply involved with the culture and the surroundings
and that is what makes her so attached to the event as it has got a
cultural importance also.
The second thing is the mysterious character of Khud
Buksh. while reading this question keeps coming back to you that, "is
Khuda Buksh Sultana's Pimp?" if we see from one perspective we can say
that itr is true as he is living with her, he
takes money from her to buy camera much like the Saugandhi's case. But
on the other handManto has described that Sultana likes her not him, she
considers her lucky and obeys her when he leaves the city. She is tied
to her but the relationship is not like a
brothel one where saugandhi was forced to go to customers by her Pimp.
the case of sultana and khuda Buksh is different from them.
