Two very important points which hit my mind while reading and comparing the two texts of Manto: ‘Hatak’ and ‘Sahib e karamat’, were the setting of the short stories and depiction of men as the dominant figures. In Hatak we are come across a very urban setting. Irrespective of the striking boundary between the consumer and supplier of prostitutes, the setting remains quite urban. While in the other text, the setting of a village is depicted with less vivid boundaries. Everyone in the village is connected socially and there is much less discrimination.

Secondly, both texts have shown the male sex as the dominant and influential one. In ‘hatak’, Madho still holds his authority over her, irrespective of how angry Saugandhi is at him for his materialistic ulterior motive to ‘love’ her. This can be seen by the fact that she agrees to send him money through money-gram during the episode of her explosion of anger and frustration. In the other text, Maujo holds authority over his wife and daughter by ignoring their silence as a plea for justice for the unfair act the con Maulvi has done to them. The only difference he has portrayed is in the psyche of these 2 types of men. Pretentious lover and the pimp in ‘Hatak’ are extremely clever. They know which strings to pull to derive the maximum gain from Saugandhi. They accept the reality and do not live in a lie. They confront their true selves with confidence and authority over Saugandhi. On the other hand, Maujo is a very shallow character. Due to his guilt he is too eager to earn ‘Sawab’ and amend his mistakes. He does not accept his reality with confidence and hence ignores the striking silence of his wife and daughter which itself is self-explanatory.
