Saughandhi's Metamorphosis by Mahsah Cheema

After the encounter with the Seth she goes through a journey of revelation and transformation and the point of view she had of her life changes from this point.
The end of the story might be the end for us but for Saugandhi it is the foundation towards new beginning. It is as if she has been reborn at the end after all the hurdles she has faced. The encounter with reality has given her a new voice, which gives her some power to speak for herself (e.g her ability to force Madhu to leave). It can be called freedom in a sense. Although she hasn’t been able to escape prostitution but has gained consciousness of the reality that she is part of.

The transformation of Saugandhi can be compared to Franz Kafka’s “ The Metamorphosis”. In “The Metamorphosis”, a guy named Gregor living a normal life wakes up to see himself transformed into an insect. This transformation into an insect shocks his closest relatives (mother, father and sister) and slowly derives them away from him. Similarly, after Saugandhi’s transformation, the closest person, Madhu (a husband like figure), is forced out of her life.  In addition, Gregor is living a life of an insect after transformation and Saugandhi after her transformation realizes that she has the same amount of value in this world as her dirty dog with a “wasted body”.
