Thoughts on Sabirah, Zakir and Partition

Sabirah in my opinion is a character which acts both as a metaphor and at the same time is real. Zakir just can't let go off her thoughts even after when they get separated due to partition. The tragedy at the time of Partition in 1947 is reiterated, in a manner, in the events following 1971. Zakir's reaction of the incidents of 1971's incidents is both interesting to note and important. He at times does not have any idea as to where he is. This also raises questions of identity. Hence the feeling of being exiled from one's home becomes perpetual. This emotion we not only see in Zakir but parts of the world where such a displacement has taken place we see similar narratives from the people affected. Hence Basti is not restricted to a particular context but is to some extent also global and also incites the reader to think as to how empty the existence of the human is.
