Railings in Garam Hava

One thing I found interesting was the railing or lack of one when the family shifted to a new home.  The railing can be seen in the sense that it’s a support when climbing upwards. Once they move from their Haveli, amongst other things, the ropes as a substitute for a concrete railing hints at how the support system they have is collapsing. It becomes more and more difficult to climb the stairs – which could signify the increased difficulty to for the Indian Muslims to go upwards in a society. The scene in which Amina learns that Shamshad is to marry another girl in Pakistan is heart rendering as we see her lose hope. At this moment when she tries to go and hide in the sanctuary of her room, the extreme effort and strain that she exerts to climb the stairs highlights her dismal situation as she realizes that she is not likely to ever find a man to support her in life.
