Shehr-e-Afsos

The most recurring theme in Shehr-e-Afsos is the concept of death. All the characters talk about it, feel it, suffer it, register it but what is it really? Is this death physical, as we know it, or metaphysical? Where is this entire conversation between men taking place? Our understanding of death revolves around the ending of this worldly life and concerns but if that's the case why are they still conversing about their lives and this bizarre place called Shehr-e-Afsos? If death has disconnected them from this world, how is the third person able to communicate with them? Is he alive or dead? Why does he not have any memory like the other two men? This death does not occur from suffering or inflicting a physical wound but upon registration of the reality. My understanding of Shehr-e-Afsos comprises of several questions and nothing more. Perhaps this text requires several readings over a passage of time before the reader realizes what the author truly meant and if still not, somethings are better left untouched.
