There are many aspects on which Brothel is different
from Hakim Sahab’s house but the most conspicuous was the male/female
relationship. Hakim sahib when is present in his house is always furious and
imposing his patriarchal authority over his daughters. His entrance in the
house is like a “Qayamat” every daughter makes herself presentable and
respectful for him but in brothel his whole character is changed. He is polite,
decent and poetic with Meena. I don’t undervalue the beauty of Meena in
affecting Hakim Sahib’s attitude but in its origins it’s Meena’s financial
independency which puts politeness and decency in Hakim Sahib towards the prostitute.
When Hakim Sahib asks Meena to come with him on the basis of his Nikah with
her. She rhetorically asks him if he is ready to leave his wife and daughters.
He replies “Unn k paas hamaray elava koi mard nahin ha ..kamanay wala”. In response
to this Meena gives a very stern reply, “Aur yahan hamaray elava koi aur aurat
nahin ha.. kamanay wali”. So in a way brothel emerges as an ethical place where
male and female communicate with each other irrespective of their financial
dependency and we see that how much this type of woman is different from the
Hakim’s daughters who are always reduced to submission because of their
inability to be financially independent.
