Apart from the many things which we see standing against
each other through symbols in Bol, we witness one more aspect which wasn’t
discussed in detail in class. During class we discussed the tensions between
Muhajirs and Punjabis and tensions between Shias and Sunnis. These tensions symbolize
a lot of different realities like Hakeem Shafaat Ullah in certain ways
symbolizes the decline of the Delhi/Mughal culture in the Subcontinent. But what we missed during the discussion was the fact that the movie through the depiction of the Hakeem vs
the Doctor tension, in certain ways, symbolizes the rationality/science vs
religion debate. In a society which is deeply entrenched in the tradition of
Hikmat and healing through Quranic verses, the movie boldly defies such notions
by placing modern medicine directly against it.
