Recurrence of Cage

A cage symbolises restriction in movement and suppressed freedom. Twice, we encounter the use of this symbolism; once in Hatak and the second time in Bol. In Hatak, we encounter that the author, while describing the interior of Saughandi’s room, points to the cage which has a parrot in it. Similarly, in Bol, there is a scene in which we see the sisters and a parrot in a cage in the same frame. Following that scene, there is a shot of a school that adjoins the house, with students in it.

In both the cases, there is definite similarity in the symbolism. Also, in both the cases, the gender corresponding to the caged parrot is always the female one. The society, in broader context, is shown as responsible for this abuse. However, in particularity, the men who are associated with these women are complicit in this relationship. A parrot in a cage can then also be taken , among other interpretations,as a criticism of patriarchy.
